A New Recipe for Kitchen Floor Plans

During kitchen renovations, many homeowners are making significant changes to their floor plans, according to the 2021 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study+. Adjusting the layout and moving walls are two of the most popular major structural kitchen modifications (44% and 34% respectively). Among the more than two in five homeowners changing the layout of their kitchen, an L-shaped layout is the most popular (38%), followed by a U-shaped layout (31%), a galley style (12%) and a single-wall layout (10%), which is up three percentage points from the previous year.

Kitchens are often referred to as the heart of the home, and their relation to other rooms and outdoor spaces are a consideration during renovations. The number of homeowners creating an open-concept floor plan by opening up their kitchen to other interior spaces has dropped dramatically in the past three years (43% in 2021 versus 53% in 2019). One in five homeowners opens the kitchen to outdoor spaces (22%), consistent with increased demand for outdoor home professionals on Houzz.++ When a kitchen is made more open to the interior, it is most often integrated completely without any wall separation (63%). When opening to the outdoors, the most popular choice is via double doors or a row of doors (56%).

Nearly two-thirds of renovated kitchens feature an island (63%). The majority of upgraded and new islands are seven feet or less in length (66%), though one-third of islands are quite large, exceeding seven feet in length (34%). Rectangular or square islands are most common (81%), with only 7% and 6% choosing an L or U shape, respectively. While major changes are taking place, they are often confined to the original square footage of the kitchen. In fact, two-thirds of homeowners keep the size of their kitchen relatively unchanged compared with one-third who make it larger, down three percentage points from the previous year. Over half of renovated kitchens are 200 square feet or more (51%). Structural changes often require the help of a professional and more than four in five homeowners confirmed that they hired or plan to hire a pro (85%), with general contractors being the top choice (49%). Fewer than one in five homeowners hire a specialty service provider without a project manager (18%).
